    Description

KM 54, 18 year type, issued while Guatemala was under Spanish control. Five cent size silver coin, with King Charles IV on the obverse.
Guatemala used two mintmarks while controlled by Spain.  G (Antigua) was used until 1773, when the city and mint were destroyed by earthquake and volcanic eruption (and as a transitional mintmark for the new mint); NG was used by New Guatemala City beginning in 1776.
Like all other Spanish colonial silver, this coin was legal tender in the United States until 1857. The Spanish 8 reales was the basis for the U.S. dollar. A real was also called a "bit" (especially when a coin was cut to make change); this is why a U. S. quarter dollar is sometimes called "two bits".
